Anytime I really detail my car, I wash it with Dawn first then dry it off with my leaf blower. Then I clay bar like these guys have said and wash it again with Dawn just to get any clay residue off that might be there. Then I hit it with my swirl remover, or heavier cut compound if there are some spots that are a bit worse than swirls with my wool pad. Then I wash the car and dry it again, then hit it with my foam pad and either swirl/scratch remover to finish up, or polish if it's already smooth. Then I wax it. I always use Meguiars Professional products, I can get them at O'Reillys. I use them over any other products you find in the normal car wash/car section at Auto Zone, Advance Auto, Wal Mart, etc and they do a fantastic job.
